It's Dandadan AU time! A bit of lore:

Spirits are supernatural creatures who govern over certain aspects of our world (like Agni is a Sun spirit while Hei Bai is a forest). Yokai are the corrupted souls of humans who suffered in terrible ways, and were unable to move on to the afterlife—thus becoming something else.

Most people can't tell the difference between a spirit and a yokai. These two dorks, though? They're painfully aware of it.

the kuroi medals for arachnus/toadal are so good hold on guys let me be annoying abt them for a second. theyre both insanely cool references and I wish they took this route with more of the kuroi medals or the medals of classic yokai in general

Toadal's medal is a reference to Utagawa Kuniyoshi's ~c. 1826 print of Tenjiku Tokubei (a kabuki character who rode a giant toad mount)

And Arachnus's is based on the 14th-century Tsuchigumo no Sōshi Emaki (the scene where Yorimitsu kills the Tsuchigumo) (which used to be my header. if you remember The Olden Days)

I lovveveveeee when medal art is derivative and takes inspiration from historical art ouoyogyuguuyrhugurghguhhhhh (falls down the stairs and dies tragically

Seeing ppl talk abt Matoba promising not to poison ppl since watching the apothecary diaries has me thinking about how much I want to see him and Maomao locked in a room together. You have 'man who's main method of convincing people he is Normal and Not Creepy is to tell them he Definitely Did Not Poison Their Food' vs 'woman who's number one hobby is Eating Poisoned Food'. They would get on like a house on fire

Matoba would try his usual 'don't worry it's not poisoned' shtick and Maomao would just be like 'damn :( If you WERE going to poison me tho how would you do it?' and they would talk about poisoning methods for literal hours while Natori, Natsume and Jinshi who are also there for some reason all watch in horror
